Alkisah, suatu ketika Nabi Muhammad SAW dan sahabatnya Ali berjalan bersama. Sementara berjalan, mereka bertemu dengan seorang pria yang kemudian mulai menghina Ali dengan kata-kata kasar.
Ali menahan diri beberapa saat, Tetapi kemudian hilanglah kesabarannya. Maka Ia mulai membalas perlakuannya itu. Ketika Nabi Muhammad menyaksikan bahwa Ali membalas penghinaan dengan penghinaan, ia pergi meninggalkan kedua orang yang bertengkar itu agar menyelesaikan sendiri perbedaan itu semampu mereka.
Beberapa waktu kemudian, ketika Ali bertemu kembali dengan Nabi Muhammad, Ali menggerutu ” Mengapa Nabi meninggalkan saya sendirian menghadapi penghinaan itu ? “
Nabi menjawab, ” Sahabatku, ketika orang berwatak kasar itu menghina engkau dan engkau diam, ada sepuluh malaikat melindungimu dan berpihak kepadamu. Tetapi ketika engkau mulai berbalik menghinanya, malaikat-malaikat itu meninggalkan engkau. Maka aku juga memutuskan untuk meninggalkan Engkau “
